Move Toward What You Need

If you're looking to learn more ways you can move along to music, you've come to the right place! We have some fun ideas for you to try out- and they even benefit your mental health!

Think about what you need, whether it's something emotional or physical.

Now, do a movement that represents what you need. Once you've done the movement, put a word to it. If you're wanting an example, the movement I did in a recent session was clenching my fists and then opening them up to represent the word release. As you're doing your move, play music that evokes what you need.

If you'd like to move along with friends or family, you can create a playlist together. As the playlist is playing, each of you will do a movement that represents what you need one at a time. This can be the same movement as before or something different. Do your movement for however long you want. Once you've finished, everyone else will repeat the movement you just did. The next person will then do their movement and have everyone repeat it similar to before. You can go around the circle as many times as you'd like and switch up your movement each time.

If you like having words to solidify what you need, another idea is to create an affirmation. Use the word you gave at the beginning for what you need and turn it into a phrase you can tell yourself. For my example word of release, an affirmation is "I choose to release". Then, put on some music that helps bring in what you need. Do the move for what you need while simultaneously saying your affirmation. You can also do this with friends and family. If you'd like to try it out with others, start with your affirmation and movement and then add on each person's affirmation and movement as you go along.

If you have any questions about how movement can support you or if you try any of these exercises out, let us know!
