I'm Celebrating!! (And How Music Helped Me Meet My Goals)

I’m celebrating completing my health challenge! I just completed a 35 before 35 challenge (35 days of goal work before my 35th birthday) which involved a number of small practices focused on stretching myself and prioritizing daily physical, mental and emotional health.

Now that the challenge is over, I wanted to share some of my insights, in hopes they may help you with your health goals.

One of my health goals was to dance in front of the mirror each day. This was the challenge I struggled with the most. Finding a mirror to dance in front of felt tedious. I found myself just wanting to dance. But, I chose dancing in front of the mirror for a reason. Dancing in front of the mirror adds intimacy. I want to continue to address myself in the mirror and continue dancing, but now I’m going to do this differently: when I pass by a mirror, I’ll pause and say “I love you, "and then I’ll dance whenever I feel like it!

And this is how music helped me with this health practice:

  1. Dancing is way more fun with music

  2. Initially, I felt a little funny talking to myself in the mirror. But if I sang instead, it felt more comfortable. Now I feel good doing either.

My favorite challenge was taking a moment to pause each day. I noticed that my really busy days felt more manageable and I felt less chaotic and anxious. I also discovered I could tell when I NEEDED to pause. Pausing centered my brain and allowed me to approach difficult situations in a much more management way.

This is how music helped me with this health practice:

Going from a heightened emotion to calm is tricky for me. Using calm music helped me get into a meditative “pause” state faster!

And, in general, music was a big part of keeping me on track with my goals. Throughout the challenge, I used music to move, feel and motivate, just to name a few!
