Strategies People Use to Hide Their Mental Health Struggles

Mental health struggles don’t always (or rarely!) look like what we expect.

People mask what they’re going through in subtle ways that are easy to miss—especially when they’ve gotten good at hiding it. Here are a few common strategies people in your life may use to quietly cope:

-Saying “I’m too busy” or “I’m just tired” to avoid social situations

-Responding with “I’m fine” and quickly changing the subject

-Deflecting personal questions or steering the conversation away from themselves

These habits might seem harmless, but they can signal that someone is feeling overwhelmed, isolated, or emotionally drained.

If you notice a loved one doing these things, try not to take it personally—and don’t give up on them. Sometimes, the most supportive thing you can do is simply sit with them in silence, or keep reaching out even if they don’t always respond. Showing up consistently can make all the difference!

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, support is available. Music therapy is one powerful way to process emotions, reduce anxiety, and reconnect with yourself. If you’d like to learn more or get started, feel free to send us a message.
